Trasferitasi con la famiglia negli Stati Uniti, si stabilisce a New York dal 1920, dove studia musica, e frequenta le gallerie d’avanguardia. Nel 1933, dopo una serie di viaggi in Europa, apre un proprio studio a New York e inizia a dedicarsi con continuità alla scultura. Entra in contatto con molti protagonisti delle avanguardie europee rifugiatisi in America dopo lo scoppio della guerra. Realizza sculture e assemblaggi con materiali di recupero, rigorosamente acromatici, spesso intinti in una pittura nera opaca e coprente. Ha diverse personali in tutto il mondo e riceve numerosi riconoscimenti.

After moving with her family to the United States, in 1920 Nevelson settled in New York, where she studied music and visited the avant-garde galleries. In 1933, after a series of trips to Europe, she opened her own studio in New York and began to focus on sculpture. She got to know many of the major figures of the European avant-garde who had fled to America after the outbreak of war. Nevelson began to create sculptures and assemblages with recycled materials, either left uncoloured or painted matt black. Various solo shows of her work have been held worldwide and she has received numerous awards.
